WIZO
Wizo - Women´s International Zionist
Organization - is operating since 1920 and has
departments i many countries. The intention has
been and still is to give support to vulnerable
groups in the Jewish community of Israel.
Since an excessive portion of Israel´s finances
are earmarked for the military defence and
security the contributions of Wizo are still
needed.
The section within Wizo which is supported by
Shalom is a day center for elderly people. It is
situated in Pisgat Zeev in northern Jerusalem.
Most people who come to this center have escaped
from the antisemitism in the former Sovjet
republics. Many of them have no relatives in
Israel and some lack money since the pensions
from their home countries have been frozen in.
They may need help for food, medicine and other
expenses.
For many the center functions as a secondary
home. Senior citizens who have lived long enough
in Israel help the newcomers to settle down in
their new country. Later on these people in turn
act as mentors for others in greater need than
theirs. In the center courses are held in Hebrew
and in Jewish culture, religion and tradition,
and excursions are arranged in the country. The
culture activities have high standard.
In its flexible and effective organization the
day center is a typical example of voluntary
social work in Israel. The talents and
capacities of everybody is taken care of and the
atmosphere is warm and joyful. The support from
Shalom has a critical importance for the
activity in the center.
JAFFA INSTITUTE - CHILDREN AT RISK
Jaffa is not only an old seaport with a pride
history. It is also the heaviest stressed town
in Israel concerning social problems, drug
abuse, violence and criminality.
Therefore the Jaffa Institute is established

dangerous environments.
The children, jews as well as arabs, who are
at risk to be in the same situation as the
parents get stable contacts with adults, support
and help to study, leisure activities and hot
meals at Jaffa Institute.
Also the parents are offered therapy and help to
break the destructive life.

Zedek Hospital, which is situated opposite the Herzl
Mountain in Jerusalem, tries to support suffering
people in different ways.
The name means “Gate of Righteousness and Mercy”
and the goal of Shaare Zedek Hospital is to give
good and qualified care to everyone independent of

and children with kidney diseases. Many children
from the arab population get dialysis.

The emergency treatment is also another of the
hospitals specialities. They are extremely good
taking care of people who have been injured by
accidents or in terrorist attacks.
KEREN KAJEMET
Since beginning of 1900-century Keren Kajemet, KKL,
has cultivated barren areas with different methods,
for instance tree planting.
KKL has also drained the marshlands and so stopped
the desert spreading.
Green forests are now part of the stony hills, due
to KKL.
The water support is also one of the tasks of KKL.
Big water tanks are constructed to store up the
water of the winter rains. The needs of the
continuous growing population will demand all
available fresh water resources in 10-15 years.
Therefore reuse of water is the only economic
possible alternative for watering plants and
agricultural use.
